resign 和 re-sign 基本相似,但是意思完全不一样,给听力造成很大的困恼,其实细看一下它们还是很好区分的。
一、resign 的音标是 [rɪˈzaɪn],记得是“z”,不是“s”,译为“辞职,辞去(某职务)”,常用的格式有:resign from sth 或 resign as sth,例如:
He resigned as manager after eight years.
八年后,他辞去了经理的职务。
Two members resigned from the board in protest.
董事会的两名成员辞职以示抗议。
My father resigned his directorship last year.
我父亲去年辞去了董事的职务。
解析:若在表示时间的短语中含有 last 或 next,那么其前不用介词 at,in 或 on.
resign 对应的一个短语动词 resign yourself to sth,译为”听任;只好接受;顺从“,此时的 to 是介词,后面跟名词或动名词,例如:
She resigned herself to her fate.
她只好听天由命了。
We had to resign ourselves to making a loss on the sale.
我们只好接受销售造成的亏损。
You might as well resign yourself to being a poor poet.
你干脆去当个穷诗人算了。
解析:在做一件事没有更好的选择又没有理由不做的时候,我们可以使用 might as well 和 may as well 来表达最容易或是最符合逻辑的行动。它们都是非正式的表建议的说法,might as well 更为普遍。
二、re-sign 的音标是 [reɪ saɪn] 中间有横杆,译为”重签,重新签名“,通常指再次签署合同,例如:
I re-sign my current jobbecauseI love it.
