M.B.A. grads are being snapped up by Amazon and other techcompanies that have thrived in the pandemic, as some traditional big hirerspull back。Techcompanies whosebusinesses have surged during the pandemic—like Amazon . comInc. and Zoom Video Communications Inc. —are snagging more of the M.B.A. talententering the workforce, helping to offset pullbacks by industries harder hit bythe Covid-19 economy.

Openings for tech positions rose at 57% of full-time Masters ofBusiness Administration programs this past fall, according to a survey ofnearly 100 schools by industry group MBA Career Services & EmployerAlliance. Overall, though, it has been a lackluster recruiting season atbusiness schools, the survey found, as nearly half reported an overall declinein opportunities for students. Amazon plans to recruit more than 1,000 M.B.A.students for full-time jobs and internships this year, a company spokeswomansaid, while Zoom said it intends to hire more M.B.A. graduates as part of anew, global emerging-talent program. Acceleration

Acceleration is aterm which basically means the pace at which velocity changes over time.Velocity basically means the speed that something is moving in a specificdirection. Acceleration relates to both speed and direction becausevelocity does too. For example, anything that can speed up, or turn left,are acceleration, though it is not limited to only those actions. Objects thatare slowing down are also accelerating, but in a different way. This accelerationis negative, also known as deceleration. Deceleration applies to the reductionin speed. It can also be applied to a change in direction, like moving backwardand forward. Something may have a very high velocity, such as a jet goingthrough the air, and just slightly speed up or slow down. That basically meansthat the plane has a low acceleration and a high velocity. Acceleration is alsosometimes used for calculating force. The formula in which to calculate forceis F(force)= m(mass)a(acceleration).

Newly made laser-cooled antimatter could test foundations ofmodern physics

For the first time, physicists have used lasers to deep-freezeantimatter. In a new experiment, an ultraviolet laser quelled the thermaljitters of antihydrogen atoms, chilling the antiatoms to just above absolutezero. This technique for slowing down antimatter — the oppositely chargedcounterpart to normal matter — could help scientists build the first antimattermolecules. Taming unruly antimatter with laser light may also allow physiciststo measure the properties of antiatoms much more precisely, researchers report.Comparing antiatoms with normal atoms could test some fundamental symmetries ofthe universe. Lasers can cool atoms by dampening the atoms’ motion with abarrage of light particles, or photons. However, it’s been hard to laser-coolantimatter because it’s extremely difficult to create. To craft antihydrogenatoms, researchers mixed antiprotons with positrons, the antiparticles ofelectrons, at the CERN particle physics lab near Geneva. Over several hours, alaser beam tuned to a specific frequency of UV light slowed the antihydrogenatoms from whizzing around at up to 90 meters per second to about 10 meters persecond.

Catnip: An Insect Repellent?

Catnip does oddthings to cats, but new research shows that it could be used as an insectrepellent. The active component of catnip, Nepeta cataria, repels insectsby triggering a chemical receptor that spurs sensations such as pain oritch. The receptor, called TRPA1, is common in animals, including humans,and responds to environmental irritants such as cold, heat, wasabi, and teargas. When irritants encounter TRPA1, the reaction can make people cough or makeinsects flee. Researchers exposed mosquitos and fruit flies to catnip andnoticed that fruit flies were less likely to lay eggs on the side treated withcatnip or its active ingredient and mosquitos were less likely to take bloodfrom a human hand covered in catnip or its active ingredient. This couldaid in the development of more potent insect repellents and in turn help developingcountries fight diseases that mosquitoes carry.
