The Sorting Hat（分院帽）
"Welcome to Hogwarts!" said Professor McGonagall.
“欢迎你们来到霍格沃茨！”麦格教授说。
"The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses."
“开学宴就要开始了，不过你们在到餐厅入席之前，首先要你们大家确定一下你们各自进入哪一所学院。”
"The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room."
“分学院是一项很重要的仪式，因为你们在校期间，学院就像你们在霍格沃茨的家。你们要与学院里的其他同学一起上课，一起在学院的宿舍住宿，一起在学院的公共休息室里度过课余时间。”
"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. "

"Now, form a line," Professor McGonagall told the first years, "and follow me."

Harry had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting.

Harry quickly looked down again as Professor McGonagall silently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first years.
麦格教授往一年级新生们面前轻轻放了一只四脚凳，哈利连忙收回了目光。
On top of the stool she put a pointed wizard's hat. This hat was patched and frayed and extremely dirty.
麦格教授又往凳子上放了一顶尖顶巫师帽。帽子打着补丁，磨得很旧，而且脏极了。
For a few seconds, there was complete silence. Then the hat twitched. A rip near the brim opened wide like a mouth - and the hat began to sing:
刚开始的几秒钟，四周一片寂静。接着，帽子扭动了。帽边裂开一道宽宽的缝，像一张嘴。帽子开始唱起来：
"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty, but don't judge on what you see. I'll eat myself if you can find a smarter hat than me."
“你们也许觉得我不算漂亮，但千万不要以貌取人，如果你们能找到比我更漂亮的帽子，我可以把自己吃掉。”
"There's nothing hidden in your head the Sorting Hat can't see. So try me on and I will tell you where you ought to be. So put me on! Don't be afraid! And don't get in a flap! You're in safe hands(though I have none), for I’m a Thinking Cap!"

The whole hall burst into applause as the hat finished its song. It bowed to each of the four tables and then became quite still again.
魔帽唱完歌后，全场掌声雷动，魔帽向四张餐桌一一鞠躬行礼，随后就静止不动了。
"So we've just got to try on the hat!" Ron whispered to Harry. "I'll kill Fred, he was going on about wrestling a troll." Harry smiled weakly.
“也就是说，我们只要戴上这顶帽子就可以了。” 罗恩悄悄对哈利说，“我要宰了弗雷德，他说要跟巨人搏斗呢。”哈利淡淡地一笑。
Professor McGonagall now stepped forward holding a long roll of parchment.
这时麦格教授朝前走了几步，手里拿着一卷羊皮纸。
"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," she said, "Abbott, Hannah!"
“我现在叫到谁的名字，谁就戴上帽子，坐到凳子上，静候分院。”她说，“汉娜·艾博!”
A pink-faced girl with blonde pigtails stumbled out of line, put on the hat, which fell right down over her eyes, and sat down. A moment's pause - "Hufflepuff!" shouted the hat.
一个面色红润、梳着两条金色发辫的小姑娘，跌跌撞撞地走出队列，戴上帽子，帽子刚好遮住她的眼睛。她坐了下来。片刻停顿后，“赫奇帕奇！”帽子喊道。
The table on the right cheered and clapped as Hannah went to sit down at the Hufflepuff table.
右边一桌的人向汉娜鼓掌欢呼，欢迎她在他们这一桌就坐。
"Bones, Susan!"
“苏珊·波恩!”
"Hufflepuff!" shouted the hat again, and Susan scuttled off to sit next to Hannah.
“赫奇帕奇!”帽子又喊道。苏珊飞快地跑到汉娜身边坐下。
"Boot, Terry!"
“泰瑞·布特!”
"Ravenclaw!"
“拉文克劳!”
The table second from the left clapped this time; several Ravenclaws stood up to shake hands with Terry as he joined them.
这次左边第二桌拍手鼓掌。当泰瑞加入到他们的行列时，有几名拉文克劳的学生站起来和他握手。
Sometimes, Harry noticed, the hat shouted out the house at once, but at others it took a little while to decide. "Finnigan, Seamus," the sandy-haired next to Harry in the line, sat on the stool for almost a whole minute before the hat declared him a Gryffindor.
哈利发现有时帽子立刻就喊出学院的名字，但有时它得花上一些时间才能作出决定。比如排在哈利旁边的那个浅茶色头发的男孩西莫·斐尼甘就在凳子上几乎坐了整整一分钟，帽子才宣布他被分到格兰芬多。
"Granger, Hermione!"

Hermione almost ran to the stool and jammed the hat eagerly on her head.

"Gryffindor!" shouted the hat. Ron groaned.

Malfoy swaggered forward when his name was called and got his wish at once: the hat had barely touched his head when it screamed, "Slytherin!"
叫到自己的名字时，马尔福大模大样走过去，而且即刻如愿以偿，帽子几乎刚碰到他的头就尖叫道：“斯莱特林!”
Malfoy went to join his friends Crabbe and Goyle, looking pleased with himself.
马尔福前去和他的朋友克拉布与高尔会合，一副洋洋得意的样子。
There weren't many people left now. And then, at last, "Potter, Harry!"
这时，剩下的人已经不多了。 最后，总算听到 “哈利·波特!”
As Harry stepped forward, whispers suddenly broke out like little hissing fire all over the hall.

"Potter, did she say?" "The Harry Potter?"

The last thing Harry saw before the hat dropped over his eyes was the hall full of people craning to get a good look at him. Next second he was looking at the black inside of the hat. He waited.
在帽子就要扣到头上遮住他的视线时，哈利看到餐厅里人头攒动，人人引颈而望，希望看清他的模样。接着就是帽子里的黑暗世界和等待。
"Hmm," said a small voice in his ear. "Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There's talent. Oh my goodness, yes, and a nice thirst to prove yourself. Now, that's interesting…So, where shall I put you?"
“嗯，”他听到耳边一个细微的声音说，“难。非常难。看得出很有勇气。心地也不坏。有天分，哦，我的天哪，不错！你有急于证明自己的强烈愿望，那么，很有意思。我该把你分到哪里去呢?”
Harry gripped the edges of the stool and thought: Not Slytherin, not Slytherin.
哈利紧紧抓住凳子边，心里想：“不去斯莱特林，不去斯莱特林。”
"Not Slytherin, eh?" said the small voice, "Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it's all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that. No? Well, if you're sure…better be Gryffindor!"

Harry heard the hat shout the last word to the whole hall. He took off the hat and walked shakily toward the Gryffindor table. Percy the Prefect got up and shook his hand vigorously, while the Weasley twins yelled, "We got Potter! We got Potter!"
哈利听见帽子向整个餐厅喊出了最后那个名字。他摘下帽子，两腿微微颤抖着走向格兰芬多那一桌。级长珀西站起来紧紧地跟他握手；韦斯莱家的孪生兄弟大声喊道：“我们有波特了！我们有波特了！”
And then it was Ron's turn. He was pale green by now. Harry crossed his fingers under the table and a second later the hat had shouted, "Gryffindor!"
接着就轮到了罗恩。他这时脸色发青。哈利紧握双手放在桌下。一眨眼工夫帽子就高喊道：“格兰芬多!”
Harry clapped loudly with the rest as Ron collapsed into the chair next to him.
当罗恩一下子瘫倒在哈利旁边的座位上时，哈利跟着其余的人大声鼓掌。
Professor McGonagall rolled up her scroll and took the Sorting Hat away.
麦格教授卷起羊皮纸，拿起分院帽离去了。
Albus Dumbledore had gotten to his feet. He was beaming at the students, his arms opened wide, as if nothing could have pleased him more than to see them all there.
阿不思·邓布利多站起来。他笑容满面地看着学生们，向他们伸开双臂，似乎没有什么比看到学生们济济一堂使他更高兴的了。
"Welcome," he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. Here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!" He sat back down.
“欢迎!”他说，“欢迎大家来霍格沃茨开始新的学年！在宴会开始前，我想讲几句话。那就是：笨蛋！哭鼻子！残渣！拧！谢谢大家！”他重新坐下来。
Everybody clapped and cheered. Harry didn't know whether to laugh or not.

"Is he…a bit mad?" he asked Percy uncertainly.

"Mad?" said Percy airily. "He's a genius! Best wizard in the world! But he is a bit mad, yes."
